Although there is an increased and improved access to antiretroviral treatment and care in many regions of the world, the AIDS epidemic claimed an estimated 3.1 million (between 2.8 and 3.6 million) lives only in the year 2005, of which more than half a million (570,000) were children.
The idea of \u200b\u200bdevoting one day to the fight against AIDS in the world emerged from the World Summit of Ministers of Health, 1988, in programs for the prevention of AIDS. Since then, the initiative has been followed by governments, international organizations and charities around the world.
From 1988 to 2004, UNAIDS (UNAIDS) organized the International Day to Combat AIDS. I chose a theme for each year after consulting with other organizations. In 2005 UNAIDS handed over responsibility for the commemoration of this day by the independent organization WAC (World Aids Campaign: World AIDS Campaign.) For 2005, chose as his campaign theme "Stop AIDS: keep the promise" (Stop Aids: Keep the Promise), which runs until 2010. This issue is not specific to the World Day to Combat AIDS, but also to the work of the WAC during the year.
